Non-calculator problem solving

GCSE Maths, Non-calculator methods, 30 minutes

Multi-step problems on money, time, ratio and area worth 3 to 6 marks, worked by hand with clear steps.

Plan before you calculate

A problem worth 4 or 5 marks has several steps. Write down what you need to find, then the steps to get there, and label each line of working so an examiner can follow it. Marks are given for each correct step, even if the final answer slips.

  1. Turf costs £6 per m². Delivery is £20. The lawn is 9 m by 7 m with a 3 m by 2 m corner missing.
  2. whole rectangle: 9 × 7 = 63 m²
  3. missing corner: 3 × 2 = 6 m²
  4. area: 63 − 6 = 57 m²
  5. turf: 57 × £6 = £342
  6. total: £342 + £20 = £362
