Unit 1, Lesson 3 of 4

Triplets

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Three in the time of two

A triplet is a group of three notes played in the time of two of the same kind. A small 3 over or under the group shows it.

  • Three triplet quavers last one crotchet (the time of two quavers).
  • Three triplet crotchets last one minim.
  • Three triplet semiquavers last one quaver.
  • Three triplet minims last one semibreve.
Three triplet quavers fill the first beat, then a crotchet
Three triplet crotchets last as long as one minim

Triplets with rests

A triplet group can include a rest: it still takes one of the three places.

A triplet with a rest in the middle: still three quavers' worth in the time of two

Tip: to check a bar with a triplet, replace the triplet with the two notes it stands for. Three triplet quavers count as one crotchet beat.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
