The order of sharps and flats

Sharps and flats always come in the same order in a key signature:

  • sharps: F, C, G, D (then A, E, B at later grades);
  • flats: B, E, A, D (then G, C, F).
Four sharps: F, C, G, D
Four flats in the bass clef: B, E, A, D
