The alto clef

Music theory, Pitch and transposition, 13 minutes

The C clef centred on the middle line, where middle C sits, how to read it, and who uses it.

A C clef

The alto clef is a C clef: the point where its two curves meet marks middle C. In the alto clef that point is the middle line, so the middle line is middle C.

  • Lines, bottom to top: F A C E G.
  • Spaces, bottom to top: G B D F.
The alto stave from the bottom line to the top line: F up to G, with middle C on the middle line

The viola reads the alto clef: its notes sit around middle C, too high for the bass clef and too low for the treble clef.
