Reading a melody

Music theory, Music in context, 14 minutes

The last section of the exam puts everything together: questions about a short melody, its key and time, its notes and intervals, and the words and signs printed on it.

Everything at once

The music in context section shows you a short piece and asks about it. Nothing here is new: each question uses a skill from the earlier sections, applied to real music. Before you read the questions, read the music:

  1. The key signature and the time signature. Which two keys fit? How many beats in a bar?
  2. The words and signs. The speed word over the start, the dynamics under the notes, the articulation on them.
  3. The accidentals. A raised note near the end often shows a minor key's leading note.
A melody to read: a key, a time, a speed word, a dynamic and some signs
