Writing intervals

Music theory, Intervals, 10 minutes

Writing a note a given interval above another: the letter first, then the accidental that makes the semitones right.

Letter first, then the sign

To write an interval above a note, use the same two steps the other way round:

  1. Count up the letter names for the number. A 6th above F is D (F, G, A, B, C, D).
  2. Choose the accidental that gives the right number of semitones. A minor 6th is 8 semitones. F up to D is 9, so lower it: D flat.
A minor 6th above F: D flat
