Four clefs and enharmonic notes

Reading notes in the treble, bass, alto and tenor clefs, with ledger lines above and below, and spelling the same sound in two ways.

Each clef marks one note

A clef fixes one note on the stave, and every other note is counted from it.

  • The treble clef curls round the second line: that line is G above middle C.
  • The bass clef has two dots either side of the fourth line: that line is F below middle C.
  • A C clef points to the line that is middle C. Centred on the middle line it is the alto clef; on the fourth line it is the tenor clef, new at Grade 5.
