Transposing by an interval
Moving a note or a whole melody up or down by a given interval, with the new key signature and every accidental right.
Two steps for every note
To transpose is to move music up or down, keeping its shape. Every note moves by the same interval. For each note there are two steps:
- Count the letter names. Up a 3rd from D is F (D, E, F: count both ends).
- Fix the accidental so the distance in semitones is right. A major 3rd is 4 semitones: D up to F is only 3, so it must be F sharp.
Tip: getting the letter right first stops enharmonic slips. G flat and F sharp sound the same, but only one of them is the right number of letters away.
