Every note and rest value with dots and double dots, how to complete a bar, and the grouping rules that keep the beats easy to see.

The values, longest to shortest

Each note value is half the one before it. Count them in crotchets:

Note	Crotchets	Note	Crotchets
breve	8	crotchet	1
semibreve	4	quaver	half
minim	2	semiquaver	a quarter
		demisemiquaver	an eighth

Every note value has a rest of the same length.
