Tuplets
Notes squeezed or stretched into a beat: triplets and duplets from earlier grades, then the quintuplets and sextuplets that are new at Grade 5.
Squeezing notes into a beat
A tuplet fits a different number of notes into a space than the time signature would normally allow. A small number over or under the group tells you how many notes there are.
- A triplet fits 3 notes into the time of 2 like them. Three triplet quavers last one crotchet.
- A duplet plays 2 notes in the time of 3, the opposite way round. It is used in compound time: two duplet quavers last one dotted crotchet beat.
