Filling in the inner parts

Music theory, Part-writing and figured bass, 15 minutes

With the soprano and bass given, write the alto and tenor so every chord is complete and every line moves well.

The outer parts first

The soprano and the bass are the parts people hear most. Once they are fixed, the alto and tenor fill in the harmony. Their job is quiet: complete each chord, double the right note, and move as little as possible.

For each chord:

  1. Name it from the bass and figures, and see which notes the soprano and bass already have.
  2. Give the alto and tenor the missing notes, then the note to double.
  3. Choose the position nearest to where that voice just was. Keep common notes.
  4. Check the new chord against the one before: six pairs of voices, the leading note, no augmented 2nd.
