Unit 5, Lesson 2 of 3
Brainlag Plus Music

Where the 7th goes

Music theory, Seventh chords, 12 minutes

How V7 resolves: the 7th falls, the leading note rises, why I then often has no 5th, and why V7d leads to Ib.

Two notes must move

In V7 two notes have somewhere they must go:

  • the 7th falls a step (in C major, F to E);
  • the leading note rises to the tonic (B to C).
V7 to I: the 7th (alto) falls to the 3rd of I and the leading note (tenor) rises to the tonic

Because both resolve, I often ends up with no 5th: three roots and a 3rd. That is normal and correct.
