About this game

2048 Cupcakes swaps the numbers of the classic sliding puzzle for photos of cupcakes. Two matching cupcakes merge into the next flavour up the ladder, from vanilla birthday at the bottom to white chocolate peppermint at 2048. Because you match flavours by sight instead of reading numbers, it feels fresh even if you have played the original a hundred times.

Made by another developer and hosted on Brainlag.

How to play

The board is a 4x4 grid. Every move slides all the cupcakes as far as they can go in one direction, and when two identical cupcakes bump into each other they get promoted to the next flavour. After each move that changes the board, a new low-level cupcake appears in an empty square: usually vanilla birthday (the 2), sometimes bubblegum pink (the 4).

The Tile Legend under the board lists every flavour in order with its calorie value, so you can always check which cupcake comes next. Reaching the white chocolate peppermint cupcake (the 2048 tile) wins the game, and Keep going lets you chase 2017 Confetti Vanilla (4096) and Rainbow (8192).

Your score is counted in Kcal: every merge adds the calories of the cupcakes you combined, and the box beside it shows the best flavour you have made. The round ends when the board is full and no move can merge anything.

Tips

  • Learn the first four flavours by sight: vanilla birthday, bubblegum pink, sunshine vanilla and valrhona blonde ganache. Mixing up two similar-looking cupcakes is the most common way to waste moves early on.
  • Pick one corner and keep your best cupcake there. Use two directions most of the time, the third only when stuck, and avoid the fourth so the big cupcake never leaves its corner.
  • Build a chain along one edge, lining up flavours in descending order next to your top cupcake, so a single merge can set off the next one.
  • Before each move, check where the new cupcake can land. A lone empty gap inside your chain is how a small cupcake gets stuck between two big ones.

FAQ

Does it save my progress?

Yes. Your current board, best Kcal score and best cupcake are kept in this browser's local storage, so you can close the tab and carry on later. Clearing site data or switching to another device starts you fresh.

Can I play on a phone or Chromebook?

Yes. On a phone or tablet, swipe on the board. On a Chromebook, use the arrow keys or WASD.

Is there an end?

Making the 2048 cupcake counts as a win, but you can keep going. The legend runs up to the Rainbow cupcake at 8192, and a round only ends when the board locks up.
