Getting the most out of horror games

Horror games work by making you wait. The best ones build tension slowly, give you just enough information to worry about, and then make you act under pressure. A good scare depends on atmosphere more than anything else, so these games reward playing with your full attention rather than in a rush.

This page has Five Nights At Freddys 1, 3 and 4, plus Granny and Granny 2. In the first Five Nights At Freddys you work the night shift at a pizzeria, watching the security cameras and closing the doors to make your power last until 6 AM. Five Nights At Freddys 4 takes the cameras away, so you listen at the doors and use the flashlight carefully. Granny is a stealth escape from a creepy house over five days, and Granny 2 adds Grandpa, who cannot hear well but hits hard if he spots you.

None of these are quick. The Five Nights At Freddys games are medium length and played with the mouse, while Granny and Granny 2 are long and use the keyboard. None of the horror games here are marked as mobile-friendly, so they are best on a computer, in a quiet room, when you are not about to be interrupted.
