Choosing a puzzle game

A good puzzle game gives you simple rules and then finds surprising depth in them. You should always feel that the answer is within reach, and the moment it clicks should feel earned rather than lucky. The best ones are easy to explain to a friend and hard to put down.

2048 is the classic number puzzle: slide every tile at once on a 4x4 grid, merge matching numbers and work towards the 2048 tile. 2048 Cupcakes swaps the numbers for cupcakes. Cat Trap is a logic puzzle on a hex grid where you fill one tile each turn while the cat steps toward the edge, and you have to box it in before it escapes. Fruit Merge has you drop fruit into a jar so that matching pieces merge into bigger ones, and Cut the Rope is a physics puzzle about slicing ropes at the right moment to feed candy to Om Nom.

Every puzzle on this page plays in short sessions and works on a phone, which makes it a good place to spend five minutes. 2048 and 2048 Cupcakes use the keyboard on a computer, while the rest, including Cat Trap, Fruit Merge and Block Blast, are played with the mouse or a tap.
