Unit 2, Lesson 2 of 2

The same note in the other clef

About 2 min to read, then 5 practice questions

Where the clefs meet

The treble and bass staves share the notes around middle C. The same sound can be written in either clef, in a different place on each stave.

The A below middle C in the treble clef: two ledger lines below
The same A in the bass clef: the top line

Worked example

Write this bass clef note at the same pitch in the treble clef.

The note to move: in the space just above the first ledger line
  1. Name it, with where it is: the first ledger line above the bass stave is middle C, so the space above it is the D just above middle C.
  2. In the treble clef, middle C is the first ledger line below, so that D is the space just below the stave.

Tip: never copy the place on the stave. Name the note, find how far it is from middle C, then find that place in the other clef.

Practise this: 5 questions, about 4 min

Answering from memory soon after reading is what makes it stick, so now is a good time.
