Melodic features
What examiners ask about a melody in an extract: the interval of a leap, the range, the climax, steps and leaps, and the devices that shape it, sequence and imitation.
Steps and leaps
Most melodies move mainly by step (to the next letter name), with leaps (a 3rd or more) for variety. A leap is usually followed by a step back the other way, which keeps the line smooth. When a question marks two notes x and y, they are usually a leap apart: name the interval from the lower note up.
