Writing for the instrument
How strings, woodwind and brass make their sound, and what that means for the melody you write for them.
The right clef and range
Write in the clef the instrument reads: violin, flute, oboe, clarinet and trumpet use the treble clef; the viola uses the alto clef; the cello, bassoon and trombone use the bass clef. Stay inside the instrument's range, because notes outside it cannot be played.
