Unit 11, Lesson 2 of 5

Intervals between the parts

Music theory, Reading a score, 12 minutes

Naming the interval between notes in two different parts, often more than an octave apart: compound intervals.

Two parts, two clefs

The two notes may be on different staves, in different clefs. Find each one, then measure from the lower note up:

  1. The number: count the letter names from the lower note to the higher, counting both.
  2. The quality: count the semitones, remembering the key signature on each stave and any accidentals in the bar.
