Unit 15, Lesson 1 of 2
Brainlag Plus Music

Ornaments, recognised and written out

Music theory, Ornaments and terms, 18 minutes

The six ornaments a Grade 6 extract may carry, what each sign looks like, and the notes it stands for: mordents, turns and trills, accidentals printed with them, and the two small grace notes.

Notes in shorthand

An ornament is a small sign that stands for a quick pattern of notes round the written note. The composer writes the sign; the player knows which notes it means. Four are signs over the note; two are small notes printed before it:

Trill
Turn
Upper mordent
Lower mordent
Appoggiatura
Acciaccatura

In a score question you may be asked to name an ornament, or to say which notes it stands for.
