Brainlag Plus Music

Terms and signs

Music theory, Ornaments and terms, 20 minutes

The performance directions a Grade 6 extract may print, in Italian, French and German, read word by word, and the marks printed on the notes themselves.

Three languages

Most directions in printed music are in Italian. Composers from France and Germany, especially after about 1850, often wrote them in their own language, so a Grade 6 extract may use French or German too.

Many directions are built from a main word and small words that change it: poco più mosso is "a little more movement", sehr ruhig is "very calm". Read a direction one word at a time, then put the meaning together.
