Phrases and form
The shape of a piece: phrases and their lengths, the climax of a melody, question-and-answer phrases, and the forms longer pieces take.
Phrases and their lengths
A phrase mark shows a musical sentence. To find its length, read the bar number where it starts and where it ends, and count both bars and every bar between. Grade 6 extracts usually move in 4-bar phrases.
Two phrases that belong together are question and answer: the first ends on V with an imperfect cadence, waiting for more; the second answers it with a perfect cadence.
