Rhythm and metre in a score

Music theory, Melody, rhythm and form, 12 minutes

Describing the metre of an extract from its time signature, and the rhythms a score question points to: dotted rhythms, syncopation and the shortest notes.

Simple or compound

A time signature is described in two words. The first says how each beat divides:

  • simple: each beat divides into two (the beat is a plain note: a crotchet in 4/4, a minim in 2/2);
  • compound: each beat divides into three (the beat is a dotted note: a dotted crotchet in 6/8).
