Formulas
- Weighted average (score₁ × weight₁ + score₂ × weight₂ + ...) / (weight₁ + weight₂ + ...)
- Score you need (target × total weight − points so far) / weight still to come
Worked example
Coursework is 40% of your grade and you scored 72. The exam is the other 60%. What do you need in the exam for 80 overall?
- Points so far: 72 × 0.4 = 28.8.
- For 80 overall you need 80 × 1 = 80 points in total.
- The exam has to bring 80 − 28.8 = 51.2 points, and it is worth 0.6.
- 51.2 / 0.6 = 85.3.
Answer: About 85.3 in the exam.
Common mistakes
- Averaging the scores without their weights: 72 and 90 average to 81, but with weights of 40% and 60% the result is 82.8.
- Using weights that do not add up to 100%.
- Mixing scales, such as a mark out of 30 with a percentage: turn every score into a percentage first.
About this tool
Grade Tracker works out your weighted average for each subject and tells you the score you need on the rest of the course to reach a target grade. Enter each assessment with its score and weight, and the numbers update as you type.
Tips
- Copy the weights from your syllabus, not from memory.
- If the target is out of reach even with 100%, lower it and spend your revision time where the weight is biggest.
- Once you know the score you need, press Plan revision for this to take that subject and target over to the Revision planner.
FAQ
- How is the weighted average calculated?
- Each score is multiplied by its weight, the results are added up, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights you have entered. Rows without a score are left out.
- Can I track more than one class?
- Yes. Add as many subjects as you like and switch between them with the tabs. Each subject keeps its own assessments and target grade.
- Where are my grades saved?
- In this browser's local storage on this device, automatically as you type. Nothing is uploaded unless you sign in to an optional free Brainlag account, which syncs it across devices. Clearing your browser data deletes your grades. What-if sliders are only a preview and are not saved.
- How is the weighted GPA worked out?
- On the usual 4.0 scale, Honors classes add 0.5 and AP or IB classes add 1.0 to the grade points, up to 5.0, before dividing by the credits. Schools differ, so check your school's rules.
