Speed trainer

Start slowly and let the tempo creep up while you play. The change lands on the first beat of a bar.

Gap training

The click drops out for a few bars while the beat dots keep going. Keep time on your own and check you are still together when it comes back.

      About this tool

This online metronome schedules every click on your device's audio clock, so the beat stays steady even when the page is busy or the tab is in the background. Set the tempo with the slider, the plus and minus buttons, by typing it, or by tapping along. Pick a time signature, choose which beats are accented or silent, add quavers, triplets, semiquavers or swing, and use the speed trainer, count-in and gap training to practise. Your presets and practice log stay in this browser, and sync if you sign in.

      Tips

      • Gap training shows whether you keep time on your own: if you are early or late when the click comes back, you are rushing or dragging.
      • Setting the click on beats 2 and 4 only (tap beats 1 and 3 to silent) gives a jazz or pop feel and builds a strong inner pulse.
      • In 6/8 the click is a quaver. Feel two big beats in each bar, each one three quavers long.

      FAQ

      What BPM is Allegro?
Allegro means fast and lively, usually about 120 to 168 BPM. Allegretto is a little slower, around 100 to 120. The metronome picks 132 when you tap Allegro.
      What BPM is Andante?
Andante is a walking pace, about 76 to 108 BPM. It is slower than Moderato (108 to 120) and faster than Adagio (66 to 76).
What BPM are Grave, Largo, Lento, Adagio, Moderato, Presto and Prestissimo?
Grave is the slowest and most solemn, below about 40 BPM. Largo is very slow and broad, about 40 to 60. Lento is slow, about 60 to 66 here. Adagio is slow, about 66 to 76. Moderato is a moderate speed, about 108 to 120. Presto is very fast, about 168 to 200, and Prestissimo is faster still, above 200. Books give slightly different ranges: treat them as a guide, not exact numbers.
How does the speed trainer work?
Set a start tempo, a target, how many BPM to add and how many bars to wait. The metronome starts at the start tempo and moves on by that step on the first beat of a bar until it reaches the target, then stays there.
Does it keep time in a background tab or with the screen off?
In a background tab, yes: the clicks are scheduled ahead on the audio clock by a worker timer that browsers do not slow down. While it plays, it asks your device to keep the screen on. If the phone locks anyway, the browser may pause the sound.
Why is there no sound on my iPhone?
Check the silent switch on the side and the volume. Newer versions of iOS let the metronome play with the switch on; older ones do not.
