Tap tempo
Tap along to the beat and read the tempo. Then practise at that speed in the metronome.
About this tool
Tap the big button, or any key, on every beat of the music. After two taps you get a tempo in beats per minute; the more you tap, the steadier it gets, because the tool takes the typical gap between taps and leaves out a stray one. Pause for a few seconds to start again. Half and Double help when you have tapped every other beat or every half beat, and Open in the metronome hands the tempo straight over.
Tips
- A quick count of 1 2 3 4 in your head keeps taps even.
- Pause for three seconds to measure a new song.
FAQ
- What is BPM?
- Beats per minute: how many beats fit in a minute. 60 BPM is one beat a second; 120 BPM is two.
- Why does the tempo jump around at first?
- Two or three taps are not enough to average out small timing differences. After about eight taps it settles.
- Can I use the keyboard?
- Yes. Any key taps while the page has the focus, and Space or Enter on the button works too.
- What tempo is Allegro?
- Allegro is fast and lively, usually about 120 to 168 BPM. The tool names the Italian tempo word for your reading.
